Coilpacks - active or passive?

Post by dazjb » Fri Jun 03, 2016 6:36 pm

Hi. I have a Mitsubishi FTO which now has a 2.5l Twin Turbo V6 engine out of a Mitsubishi Galant VR4. I am using the ECUMaster EMU in place of the standard ECU.

I have it all wired up and just calibrating sensors, etc. but I am unsure what to select for the 'Coils Type'. There are three coilpacks connecting directly to the plugs which run wasted spark. There is no external ignition amplifier to the coils, the coils are fired directly from the ECU. The coilpacks have three wires going to each.

Do i select the passive option 'Coils without ignition amplifier'? Whats confusing me is I am unsure whether the term 'ignition amplifier' refers to something inside the coil or an external unit. I dont want to select the wrong option and make an expensive mistake.

Thanks

Yes! You do :P

The EMU can handle both ouput Signals for Coils with and without amplifier

Thanks
It can be BOTH

There are Coils/coilpacks with an integrated ampfilier, and there are Coils/coilpacks where an external amplifier module fires them.
For example the AC Delco D585 is a single Coils with integrated amplifier.
the "newer" VW VR6 coilpack has also 3 integrated amps for wasted spark.
And the EDIS4 is a System with an external module
