Recommend Coils

Post by Thilo » Sun Jul 17, 2016 10:24 pm

Hi,
I'm not happy with my Bosch 2x2 wasted spark coil on my SR20DET, so I want to change my ignition System. I'm running 9:1 CR and 1,4 bar boost, but I'm planning for 2,2-2,4 bar. My spark plugs allready have been regapped to about the half and I had to put dwell times to the highest setting allready, to prevent spark blowout

-So what could be a good coil? I heard about LS2 truck coils and the VAG ones from the Audi R8 and TT-RS.
-What could be better, EMU internal amplifier or external one? If external, why? Or is there no difference?

I've understood a lot about ignition systems allready, but I think, I'm missing something important.

Greets

I am using VAG COPs, and i am happy with it. This coils are "smart" , the chance for noise going to wirring smaller. They are cheap and easy to get buy us.

Ok, thanks.
This would be also my choise till jet. Do you use the internal driver and how do I have to wire them? And what dwell times I have to use? I can't find good information about them.

i found large dwell times do not usually help with blowout often running the dwell as low as possible is best

ps. Im a very big fan of CDI ignitions for turbo engines, always runs better makes more power and never has any misfires, no matter how much boost you want to run, in my experience.

Just for me to understand, a bigger dwell time enlarges the energy of the spark (mJ), right? So shouldn't that help against spark blow out? Could it be, that I totally misunderstood something?

For CDI, what do I need to use this? I know what CDI is, but I never worked with it before. Maybe some good tips where to read about it?

yes in theory maybe you are correct but in practice it doesnt seem to work that way, i am no expert on coils but blow out is a common problem with turbo engines and poor fuel quality, so just by experience i found that misfires get worse with either too much or too little dwell time.

CDI is Capacitor Discharge Ignition, there are a lot of aftermarket systems on the market they are usually quite expensive but generally they work very well! and cures all ignition related problems.

So which system would you recommend for my egnine? I know, how it works, but I can't find ignition moduels for car engines. They seem to be all for scooters and bikes. What is a good brand? MSD?
