Ignition strategy

Post by pepifebles » Thu Dec 29, 2016 12:11 am

Hi, I have read remap vag cars (Revo, Apr) uses "V" timing strategies to get spool faster. Before boost, ignition timing down to only 2º or 3º, then whe reach max boost back to up timing advance. What its advise timing strategies to spool faster?
My engione its Toyota 3sgte.

I wouldnt call that a common practice, its something you will need to experiment with yourself, just make sure you have good knock detection of some sort!

Main goal of tuning ignition timing is not for faster spool, but for MBT.

I agree with you, but each car is different and mine need spool faster. I reach 1 bar close 4000rpm short gears. I would like get it 200/300rpm before.

I was dicsussing this many times. Yes, less advance will make your exhaust gases hotter, and turbo spools faster, but you are making less torque than possible with the MBT timimng. So if you tune for best MBT all the time, you will not see boost, but will have the maximum torque possible in this revs.....

Then you think that in that case its best strategy? Will be interesting know how many time take to reach X rpm In one way or another.

OK so i will ask you in one example :

A) 3000RPM .... 150kPa ..... 20deg ign .... 300Nm
B) 3000RPM .... 200kPa ..... 5deg ign .... 250Nm

what do you want A or B ?

If you are not happy with boost trashold, you should ask abbout cam timing, may be smaller turbine housing or something what fisically affects the VE of the engine.

Ok, logically I want 300nm. Do you know any APP to measure NM?

Yes of course, my Rolling Road with retarders are reading Nm inklusive Steady state tuning..... this is how i can achieve the best results.... without it ? no chance.
When i was tuning car on street or Airport , i was using G-meter, or Driftbox and what i was looking for ? Simply the fastest acceleration on single gear....

Has anybody used the EMU log and dyno feature to see the acceleration times and torque curve? Does it work for finding the optimal timing and spooling?

Yes some users are working with it. The problem is, you need to input all correct values, or your number will not be real. But even if your numbers are not real you can still find optimal setting. Just repeatly run the same gear on same way at same conditions.

Okay, very good to know that the dyno log works that precisely. The absolute torque value isn't important to know (at least for me), only the difference between different setups and maps.
