VW VR6 rich lambda and high egt

Post by altmanis » Tue Jun 23, 2015 7:01 pm

Hi,

a few days ago I started tuning a VW Golf3 VR6 turbo with Emu ECU.
In idle, part throttle and cruise the car is good to drive.
In engine speeds above 5500 rpm @ 270kpa, I had to tune the car really rich (0,71 lambda) and the egt with 930C was still high.
I think there is something wrong, but I just don't know what it is.
I already tuned a VW Golf 3 VR6 turbo, and there I had no problems like this.
The differences of the cars are cams, injectors and the ignition.
Bad car: original cams, Siemens Deka 875ccm, original ignition block
Good car: Cat cams, Siemens Deka 630ccm, VR5 single ignition coils

I hope someone can help me or give me some assistance.
Thank you!

Lambda 0,71
Please post your configuration file here, everything else is hard to fix.

Because of ignition, did you have checked your ignition configuration with the timing light? By the way, the deka 875 are very bad injectors. Is everything ok with the injectors, are every spark plug looks comparable?

Did you set the Rcal of lambda right?
Best regards,
Jan

The Rcal should be right.
I have set the ignition timing with the timing light.
Before the injectors get installed in this car, they were in another 6 cylinder and they were okay.
Config is in the attachment.
Thanks for help by the way! :D

What compression ratio do you have? And i Hope you drive on E85 because your ignition angle is very early.

Your VE map looks strange, i think your wastegates open at 270kpa because then it make sense that your map is only at these range high. I think if you have in the future boost problems and your boost goes under 270kpa than you have an mixture problem because you go to lean under this pressure, but this is not your problem now.

Your trigger setting is not complete right, trigger angle should be 78deg. What does the sparkplugs are looking? May be only one zylinder is lean.

At first i can not find big failues in your mapping. Do you have a catalyst? Maybe this is damaged.

Jan

Compression Ratio is 7,7:1 .
We drive with 100 octane shell Vpower.
I forgot to say, that we use the second table for high power and the first table we want use for low power.
I already removed the spark plugs and it looks like 5 cylinders were to lean, maybe I need to go with injector trim?
In the car there is no catalyst installed.

For my opinion you go to early with your ignition angle.

If i'm in your situation i make the following tests:

1. check lambda with an external controller.
2. check EGT sensor with an external Controller. Where have you connect your EGT sensor?
3. play with injector trim at the fat zylinder and look what changed.
4. remove 5deg of ignition timing and look what happens.
Best regards,
Jan

Ok, thank you for your help.
I will test it.
The EGT goes dircectly in the ECU.

i also recommend fuel injector tester like i use. it is very good for comparing injector flow. ....

whats your fuel pressure at boost ?

I have seen this on VR6 engines with bigger cams. Try to adjust the camshaft on exhaust side.
If you pull out 5 degres of timing you should see a dramatic increase in EGT

With your 5deg you're right, but for fuel i think the ignition Angle is to early at 270kpa.

And he uses original cams, at the VR6 you cant adjust the exhaust side and intake side separately , they are both on one cam.

When the trigger angle in primary trigger setting is wrong, than I am 5 degrees wrong from the current ignition table!?
If I remove again 5 degrees from the table, than I drive -10 degrees pre-ignition?
I have to test it, but I think I really get high Egt then.

We tested the egt and lambda sensor and they seem to be right.
I changed the trigger angle to 78.
I think the timing of the cams are wrong, because of the thick cylinder head gasket.
The car now gets catcams and adjustable cam gears, maybe that helps.

Did you test your timing with the timing light ?

Hey :)
i thing you got bad settings in Primary trigger. the error is in first trigger tooth and trigger angle.
sory for my bad english :)

We found the solution.
The problem was, that three pistons were brocken. :(
