BMW E30 VSS Sensor

Post by derOJ » Sun Apr 23, 2017 4:23 pm

Hi.
My E30 has a reed contact in its differential to generate the signal for the speedometer.
It just switch to ground 9 times per wheel revelation.
I connect this signal to EMU with "Hall/Optical" and "Enable 5V Pullup"
Then I do the VSS Output back to the BMW Speedometer.

It works, but I get many "spikes" on my Speedo. It shows e.g. 70km/h then suddenly 130 or else and back to 70km/h.

I think it is because of the bouncing reed contakt.
Is there a chance for a filter to compensate this? Or shall I try to change the sensor to Hall, or VR?

Just a little helper..

Here's a picture of the trigger wheel and the sensor.

Nice pics :)
Thank you.

I will try a simple capacity with 33nF or something.
If that doesn't help, I will try to use ABS signal. Because mine doesn't have an ABS system installed, I can use the wheel sensors without interfere with ABS.

why are you doing it this way??? the e30 has a speed signal from the body harness/cluster to the original ecu so why not just connect that wire to the EMU VSS input

Because the original Speedo is limitet to 240km/h.
I switched to a speedo with 300km/h. And so I have to adjust the speed signal with EMU

Now I am using the ABS Sensor and it works great.

Did I mention I like the EMU?
Just switched to VR Sensor, diesabled Pullup, set the frequency divider and scale factor.
Great!

what exactly is your problem?

do you want to use the speedsensor from the differential or an ABS sensor?

I Would use the Signal from the dash, also the differential Sensor. I Think The Signal are the Same.

Car has no ASC .

no, they are not the same.
the signal from dash is debounced. you should use this, instead of the diff signal.
it should be the black/white wire from the dash harness
in EMU you have to set the input signal to optical/hall sensor and no pullup
