Can bus BMW E46 instrument, temp gauge problem

Hello
I have a can-bus module connected to my E46 instrument cluster, i works ok.
it's a track car so the only functions i need is: Rev-counter, oilpressure warning og temp gauge.
while racing this weekend, the temp gauge was very steady, right in the middle.
But then the red temp gauge light went on for about 20 seconds, went out, and then on again several times. -still with the needle in the middle.
I have no way of telling how hot the engine actually was.
Is the needle wrong, or the light wrong, or is there something else that turns on the red light?
-The instrument is only connected to the EMU. -there is no coolant level connected.
-the needle is not stuck (when i turn the main switch - the needle goes alle the way up an down)
