first trigger tooth can it be ZERO???

quick question can the first trigger tooth be set to ZERO? or must it be at least
1 or greater??
engine is AU ford 6 cyl and missing tooth is about 50-60 degrees BTDC so if we can set to Zero would be perfect!!
sorry just helping someone with a remote base tune so i dont actually have the vehicle to try it! ... good information to know all the same

Not sure if it can be recomended,but sometime last tooth (59) work well because it is in fact 0 or -1 tooth

I'm running at zero but I suppose you could add teeth to shift the ignition phase to the next cylinder ?

why is it not recommended???
yes using one of the last teeth is how the customer had it setup, but i just wanted to eliminate one whole cranking revolution every time the engine starts!
and yes we can also start the sequence form the next cylinder but if we can use zero then we dont need to

Maximum advance is dictated by missing tooth position so I guess if the missing tooth was at 10BTDC you could go to the next cylinder and deduct a few teeth to increase the timing window.

The trigger angle setting determines the max advance, missing tooth position is actually not relevant to the advance at all. However it is relevant to the position of the first trigger tooth which in turn determines the amount of trigger angle available. Obviously first tooth cant be lower than zero, so if theres still not enough room to get a decent trigger angle in there then as you say we need to jump to the next cylinder. In my case ZERO is perfect as i still get at least 50 degrees trigger angle. Tooth 1 (36-1) would only give me 40 degrees so thats getting a bit tighter than i prefer!!

When I get some spare time I'll mess around with a timing light and alter the tooth/angle settings.I suspect that angle and tooth are interchangeable.I'll check maximum timing limits with different settings

yes exactly you can add teeth and reduce timing angle or reduce teeth and add timing angle to remain calibrated... (in my case 36T so each tooth =10 degrees) but the maximum advance will match the timing angle setting.

There is only one limitation. Any of trigger tooth cannot be at gap.
For 4 cylinder engine if you select first tooth 0 the next trigger teeth will be 30, 0, 30
For 6 cylinder engine the sequence will be: 0, 20, 40, 0, 20, 40
For 8 cylinder engine the sequence will be 0, 15, 30, 45, 0, 15, 30, 45
So for 8 cylinder engine you cannot use first trigger tooth
13 (because the sequence will be 13, 28, 43,58(!!!)),
14
28 (because the sequence will be 28, 43,58(!!!), 13)
