VSS - Vehicle speed sensor input
Post

Hi All,
sorry for asking so much at one time

.
I want to use traction control on the car I am working on. This is a BMW E34 535i/Alpina B10 BiTurbo. The vehicle speed signal is comming from the differential sensor to the instrument cluster. In the instrument cluster the signal is transferred to other modules as a 12V PWM signal. Could this signal be used as VSS input? I tried many things (Hall / VR) but can't get it working.
Should i transform the signal to 5V to let it work?
BR,
Tomba

On my e36 BMW There is a speed signal that comes from the cluster to the factory ecu right there in the harness so i just connected it to the VSS input and it works perfectly. I selected sensor for the speed source and Hall/optical for the sensor type, not sure if I used rising or falling edge but i dont think it matters. I entered 0.7 on the speed ratio to get the calibration somewhere close, i never bothered to get it perfect since i dont actually use it for anything.

Thanks for your reply,
Can you get a screenshot from you settings for me?
It should work equally. I tried different settings yesterday and it didn't work with any of them.

not so easy all my EMU maps are on my tuning lap top, but really there are only the three settings i listed above!
As long as you have the correct harness wire connected it should work, its pin 29? on the older 55 pin connector or pin 42 on a m3.3.1 (88 pin connector)
If your car has EML then it looks like there is no connection to that pin and as far as i can see there is no speed signal available from the dash cluster!!!
in which case you might need to dive into the chassis wiring somewhere and pick up the signal directly from the diff sensor wires and connect it to the EMU sensor ground and VSS input.
ps. wiring and pinouts here
