Which coil for best result

Hi,

first of all, I have an Nissan SR20DET with a Bosch 2x2 wasted spark coil at the moment. But as I was increasing boost in the past I've got more and more a problem with spark blow out :x I allready regapped my spark plugs to 5mm evenly (NGK BKR8EIX/2668) and my coil is set to dwell times for 10A primary current. That should result in 45kV and nearly 90mJ. But it doesn't help.

So I've researched alot about ignition systems and ended up with only a few options for boosted engines (ls2 truck coil for example). My favorit till jet would be the NGK 48042, which are normally found on Audi R8 engines and some 1.8T from VW (Golf R for example).

My questions:
- What do you guys think about them?
- Has anybody a datasheet, I can't find one? Or at least dwell settings and provided Spark energy?
- How to wire these up to the EMU?

5mm plug gap sounds nice !

I will look for a file with loged missfires the next couple of days.

Oh I mean 0.5 mm gapping :D :roll:

Hi Thilo,

I already had the same problem^^ I had a (new) spark plug cable which was broken inside the plug connector. At high loads this plug wasnt able to fire. New cable, no problems and powwweeeerrrrr up :)

I am using VW COPs from Bosch on SR20DET without any problems...............

I think, that could be the problem here, too. A broken cable, but I never thought about that :roll:

Thanks, I'll try new cables first. Which one did you take clem? Build yourself or are there any p&p?

Spark blowout is a very common problem on boosted engines... anything over about 20 psi and you are usually running into trouble and in many cases at even lower boost especially if it it was an ignition system not designed for boosted application,

The best solution is a CDI ignition system, this should be something everyone fits to any high performance or race engine, regardless if its turbo or not, the power gains are often quite large!... I know they are expensive but its always money well spent!

Sometimes the burn rate is so much better the fueling needs a retune!!

Only problem I ever had with spark blowout was when using a CDi and it was just a nitrous motor-had to close the plug gap down.
I have since ran turbo motor with nitrous to 32psi / 125hp nitrous on a simple waste spark ignition with no issues

After clem said, he had a broken wire, I recheckt my wires and conectors. And I noticed, that the conectors ontop of the spark plugs are a bit loose.

Further, I crimped the wires by myself and now I remember, the connectors to the coil were a bit old and the copper looked darkened. So probaply this also plays its part :mrgreen:

So I think the best is to start from scratch. I have NGK 2668 (BKR8EIX). The "R" in the name stands for resistance, so my spark plugs allready have an inbuild resistor and I need wires without resistance, meaning copper wires. Please correct me, if I'm wrong :)
