2003 Hyundai Coupe (GK) 2.7L V6

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum but not new to tuning cars via Piggyback ECU's. Currently I'm running Perfect Power SMT8 on my modified Normally Aspirated Hyundai Coupe. I am also running E85 and am running into issues advancing timing with the Perfect Power product. Its a Siemens ECU with a 60-2 trigger pattern and a 3 wire powered HALL Effect crank sensor. I am wondering if you think DET3 would be better suited to my needs? The issue seems to be that the Perfect Power unit seems to be introducing signal noise into the ignition output line that after a while causes the Hyundai Siemens ECU to trigger a 'limp home mode'.

How is the DET3 compared to other piggyback products in controlling timing? Do people find themselves having to use all sorts of resistors and capacitors to get the thing to read and modifying timing correctly? How is support for the DET3? I live in the USA and Perfect Power is in South Africa so I struggle with the time differences and getting answers to my questions. I've looked through this forum and I see a lot of unanswered questions as well?

The DET doesn't get as much love as the EMU does.

Also not too many people are using it. I have used it, and liked it, but like any other piggyback, it's not without it's faults.

I cannot tell you if your crank trigger will work, there is a bunch of different configurations. I do see there is a drop down for the 60-2 and the hall effect sensor. So it should work. As far as launch control/ignition timing adjustment goes, the way all piggybacks work is it will disrupt the signal, and reintroduce it to force the launch limiter. On and OBD2 car, I would imagine it would throw a code though.

The DET3 software also has a scope function which will let you know if you really have noise on the line or not. It also has a Frequency Modification type, which allows you to skew the frequency, and this may fix your problem.

As far as resistors and capacitors, there is no such thing. DET3 offers pull ups for those things. There isn't any need for that (unless it's an injector impedance thing). I used it for sometime, but my biggest grip is that it did not allow advancing on NISSAN cars. Could retard all day, but no advance.

I also never used FIT mode. As far as being the US, there's a handful of dealers (myself), the guys at ATS, and the US HQ is located here in TX as well.

Fit mode allows you to control the injectors directly, without having to skew your load sensor. So you can run a really big injector in FIT mode. While in piggyback mode you'll have to fudge the load signal to trick it, which can cause it to run more timing.

With the DET3 though, boost control, and MAF delete are the biggest thing for me. The DET3 costs almost as much as a good EBC (AVCR/GReddy etc), and Nissans have very finicky MAFs. So I like to use it for a lower end nissan guys (SR20 with bolt ons, or small boosted KA setup).

So how is the built in noise filtering in the DET3?

I hate to say it, but I've never had to use it. But to be perfectly clear, I don't even know if you can use the Frequency modifier. To my understanding it's used to simulate the MAF, or to clamp a certain signal.

I'd love to give the DET3 a try to see if it can do a better job with timing than the Perfect Power SMT8 but I'm a little hessitant to pay over 400 USD for something that may work.. :( I don't want to be stuck with another Piggyback paper weight.. any suggestions? Any way I can a refund on the unit if the ignition timing doesn't work? :)

I totally understand. I don't think so though. I'm actually doing an install in the next few weeks on a 3000gt VR4 in the few days. I believe it uses the same style crank sensor.

I went ahead and purchased a DET3 this morning. I'm hoping it fixes my issues as Perfect Power has gone non-responsive.. :(

I think the old VR4's use a two wire VR sensor and most recent Hyundai's use a 3 wire digital Hall, but I could be wrong.
