Toyota 2GR-FE VVTi support?

Post by John Huijben » Tue Nov 25, 2014 9:49 am

Hello,

I'm thinking about getting an ECUmaster ecu for my 2GR-FE engine, but I'm not sure if the vvti is supported.
It's a v6 dual vvti engine, so there are 4 VVTI pully's, 2 for intake, 2 for exhaust.

The crank angle sensor is a VR sensor, 36-2 triggerwheel on crankshaft, as shown here:

Each camshaft has it's own 0-5v hall sensor for position sensing:

Scoping the crankwheel and camshafts shows the following pattern, the outern teeth show the crankshaft pulses, the inner teeth show what the VVTI sensor is showing:

There is no seperate sensor for sensor if the crankshaft is at the intake or exhaust stroke, the sensor on one of the intake camshafts is used for that. After the missing tooth the ecu should look to if the VVTI sensor is high or low.
The VVTI actuators are single acting, so only one output is needed for operation of each pully, so 4 outputs in total. Some more information about the used actuators:

So, can this be controlled by the ecumaster ecu?

Yes. EMU already working with 2gr engine.

Hi
I know this engine very well but you have a 4 variable cams and EMU won't control them so at the moment is NOT possible.
Buy connecting both intakes and exhaust together you wont be able to control both banks.
I can provide pectel ecu with dozen of maps for this engine :)

Ok, so if I understand correctly at this time 2 vvti camshafts are supported, but not 4?
I guess it would be possible to always have the exhaust camshafts in the full advance position and only control the intake camshafts with the ecu, but since I'm shopping for an ecu I would rather have something that can control all 4.
Is support for 4 camshafts planned for the future? Looks to me like the ecu has the input's and outputs, it just needs the firmware for it? Or does it need another digital input for it to work?

Only 2 camshaft are supported due to hardware limitation (2 CKP inputputs).
In your situation you can control intake cams to make good power and leave exhaust in factory position or try to control them in some regions in on/off manner.

Unfortunately this one is very sensitive for exhaust cam position the only way to do it is to replace exhaust sprockets with solid one and control only intake cams.
