Misfiring?
hello,
I have recently converted my volvo 740 b230fk (giant ass holset, build motor) to emu standalone.
now my problem is this, I am using a active wasted spark coil from the vag group, has 4 connections,
1-signal cil 1+4
2-12v+
3-signal cil 2+3
4-ground
but for some reason it just doesn't fire on cil 1 and 4, I even went as far as reconnecting the signal wires to ingnition outputs 5+6,
my volvo uses the original volvo 60-2 flywheel
tdc passes the sensor 14teeth after the trigger (i,e, 84 degrees)
anyone here got an idea what I am doing wrong.

Re: Misfiring?
It doesn't fire or it doesn't spark?
I can't see anything that's wrong with your settings.
Expect your trigger angle is pretty high. In the manual it says 50-60°. I don't know if this is relevant, but you could try a higher trigger tooth, and lower angle.
Maybe your coil is bad.
Greetings.

Re: Misfiring?
well actually I also tried the trigger tooth thing, I did a setting with trigger tooth5 wich makes the trigger angle 54 degrees, didn't make a difference, so then I thought how about that new coil would it be broken, so I went to the junkyard and grabbed me a coil of an ford (passive wasted spark coil) changed the plug, changed the settings, still only 2 and 3 were firing. and with both coils I do have spark on cilinder 1 and 4.
Re: Misfiring?
So you have Spark on all cylinders, but 1&4 are not running. Do they get fuel? Are the Plugs wet? Check the wiring to injectors.

Re: Misfiring?
Where did you ground the coils? These have 2 grounds, one has to ground on the cylinder head and the other one on the ecu sensor ground.
Re: Misfiring?
I am sorry nickbmw, but the wiring scheme clearly shows only 2 wires going to the ecu (signal) and 1 wire being 12+ and the other directly to ground so it should be connected like it is in a typical vw polo or golf or whatever vag uses this coil.
Re: Misfiring?
I had similar problems with the vw coil you're using, and i never managed to find out what goes wrong, after testing 2 of them I got so frustrated that I decided to go on individual coils and the problem solved imediately...I know thats the expensive solution, but its time worthy, compairing to find out how this coil can work...I have read on another forum (megasquirt) that this thing can be drived as apassive one (+12v) to work more properly, but I never risked that.
If the ford coil you got is working, why dont you use that? The firing problem should be from somewhere else (injectors/loom) if you have spark to all cyllinders and your timing is ok.

Re: Misfiring?
Sorry, i just re read, i thought you are using the red "R8" coils
Re: Misfiring?
guys, thanks for thinking with me, but the problem is solved
my 100km old iridium plugs, failed on me. put the timing light on and at cilinder 1 the light wouldnt flash when the plug was mounted, pulled the plug had spark and the timing light was flashing, apparently iridium plugs are really prone to double sparking (between elctrodes and between the ground).
put another 70 euros worth of plugs in it and it fired right up, most scorching fact was that I did get all the base settings correct on the first try
