EMU USB connection/Emu self remapping?

Post by clem » Sat Oct 08, 2016 11:09 pm

Hi,
concerning the emu, my car is running fine since over a year. But since a few weeks my laptop (and other laptops) can not connect to the emu, there is no windows "bombum" sound when plugging the jack in, like normally when an USB device is connected. The computers do simply not recognize that there is something plugged in, wiggling and moving the connectors and bending the cable does not make a change. USB Sticks, etc. are recognized, so the computers ports are good. I checked the cable by measuring its single lines - also OK.
I remember, a while ago I drove my car, turned engine off and ignition on again to tune the emu. I made some changes, maps permanent and turned off the ignition and left the car - nothing strange here. After one hour i started the engine, but it would not rev over 3000. Immediately plugged in the laptop and saw that in my VE table there were some values as high as 6500 (i was only using table 2 back then). I took a picture with my phone:
DSC_1486.JPG
Even if some cells were marked and something hit the "+" button for a while, that could not happen, as the max value you can enter is 400.

I re-uploaded my last safed version - everything fine again. ............COULD there have happened something to my emu/usb connection?

A week later I used the car again, but I was only able to do one more upload and record 7 minutes of log, then the connection dropped. Since then I am on a bit of a blind flight. The engine runs well, everything seems to work, except of the connection.

According to an other thread with USB problems, I now measured that the USB Connector shield has a good ground connection. Any thoughts what I could do? Reinstalling EMU software and drivers did not change a thing.

I am now going to open up my untouched EMU and break its warranty seals, but I assume they are out of date anyhow :D
I want to check if some USB communication IC literally blew up, and let you know.

Thanks for any helping input
Clem

Ok, inside everything appears normal. If the ECUMaster team is OK with that, I could post pictures from the inside. But as nothing smells smoked up nor looks grilled, there is nothing special, except of C5, there are solderpads but no capacitor in place. As the pads are covered by the glossy coat, I think the capacitor was not lost over the time, it never was installed.

My board is Ver. 1 Rev. E if you can find that useful.

Kind regards, Clem

Hi!

Such corruption could appear after firmware upgrade :( We are working on this issue.
We suggest always load the previous tables after upgrade (before the upgrade the maps are automaticaly saved to your EMU directory)

Hi,

thanks for the reply! OK, I think I did a firmware upgrade that day. So there did not happen something to the EMUs internals?
Do you have a guess why there is no USB communication possible? I am no stranger to electronics, could you point me into one direction to solve that problem? Have you had units with failed USB controllers or similar?

Cheers Clem

Hello!

Do you think that downgrading the FW, like described in that topic viewtopic.php?f=19&t=8548&p=15694&hilit ... ade#p15694
to something below 1.173 would cure my EMUs USB problem?
I am afraid of trying that, as I might brick it. Perhaps the FW reflash again corrupts the data and I might still not able to communicate to the unit.

Stay and not being able to communicate VS. Brick in attempt to change the FW
What should I just do :(

It is very strange. Are you sure your USB cable is ok ?
Maybe the USB socket in EMU is broken ?
Is windows detect the device ?

One more thing. Try to change USB driver.

One one of my laptop USB connection stoped to work after windows update.
Downloading the latest drivers solved the problem

Hi, thanks for your Support!

I now installed the new driver software, no change. Windows still does not recognize my EMU. No sound when plugging in, no device scanning etc., nothing happens.
So you think I might have a hardware problem? I will get a known good USB cable and check if my cable has a fault, but I think it is good, as I measured it.
If the new cable does not help, I will check the EMU socket more exactly than the last time. :geek:

I had the same issue with the usb driver.
I would change the USB cable first and eventually check on other laptop

Hi, I now tried a known good cable and a known good computer without success.
What should I do? I will take a closer look at the socket in the emu again, as the problem seems to be inside that silver box...

Has anybody else encountered a broken USB connection not correlated to external hardware/software?

Hi tech masters,

I opened my emu again, and measured Socket to the USB controller: D+, D-, and GND have continuity to their pins on the 1147. It seems like the USB VCC line ends in the socket -> that is OK?
I also tried to upload the newest firmware with the instructions mentioned in a post above - The client software was not able to do so, it spit the error:
"Cannot enter boot loader."

Is simply changing the 1147 by soldering a new one in place possible? Or do you use a custom pin configuration? There is a pretty cool possibility of testing the controller described in the product data sheet, but therefore the IC needs to be taken off the board. I would only do this as last attempt.

Thank you very much

Send your device in to be tested or repaired, it's unlikely you'll make anything better by trying to repair it yourself.

i did repair emu usb myself after cracging cable in car door and shorting some wires inside

ftdi chip can be changed but protection lack will lost its integrity so even more humid air can cause oxidation inside device

allso after ftdi chip replacement you have to program it. guys from ecumaster were so kind that they send me necesary config files so they probably will allso to you

Thanks for your answer!!! That could also have been the reason for my broken connection. I used an semi broken extension cable until that day back then. It had to be bent slightly in a certain direction for a normal connection. I never thought of possibly damaging my emu with that 3€ cable

I resoldered the original usb controller without success. So it must be the chip.

I will get a chip and let you know if my emu will be talking again.

Thanks again!

Re: EMU USB connection/Emu self remapping? SOLVED

Post by clem » Fri Mar 03, 2017 9:12 pm

Hi,

thanks to the tech support (Jakub) my EMU communicates with my computer again. I contacted the tech support and they told me what to do.
To let you know: I had to replace the USB-Serial converter chip and program it to work correctly. Overall time consumption ~1,5h. Would be easy to do in 15 mins, if you did it once and have the necessary software already installed etc.

Everything is fine now, thanks again for the support :)

Best wishes,
Clem
