SMG Transmission

Post by alper » Thu Jul 09, 2015 9:23 am

Hello
Is it possible to use the BMW e46 SMG transmission WITH the Emu and Without the original ECU ?

I want to put this transmission to a typical old mk2 golf.

EMU doesn't support SMG transmission control

I was searching for this actually, but I was thinking of using the stock Transmission Control Module (TCM) and if you look into the wiring, the basic wires are CAN-L, CAN-H, and K-line, so would be able to control the SMG by sending the required CANBUS data to the stock TCM from EMU? and just neglect the K-line since its older and slower protocol, I don't think the TCM will see error in that since it depend on one of these protocols as far as I know !!

Thanks,

Signals exchanged via SMG CAN Bus:
Engine Speed, Engine Coolant Temp, Engine Oil Temp, Intake Air Temp, PWG, EDR Feedback Pots, Wheel Speed, Transverse Acceleration, Steering Angle, Cruise Status, Parking Brake, Door Contacts, Brake Light Switch, Key Memory.

Am still researching for it, as I have a car to test it when I obtain my CAN BUS tools to be able to read it and see how far I can come up with

problem is not to find what need to be send but what message ID is it which Byte how long byte need to be etc.. that is not that easy unless you will find DBX file for bmw but non of manufacturers will release it this is highly confidential . to find out all this parameters without that file is easily week or two work 9 hours a day with oem ecu and emu and CAN bus reader/ simulator. if you will cover developments costs no problem to do it, just time involved and work for it is really worth if you have a big marker for it so you can split development costs over few cars..

Is this SMG the same as a mechatronic fitted to virtually everything ? They are good boxes and I'm suprised no one has cracked the codes for them yet

I did some research into this transmission a while ago. They are fitted to Jaguar,Range Rover,Bentley,BMW,Mercedes Rolls Royce etc from 2002 and there is a factory in the USA making copies under licence for Ford-they'll take 1000hp stock. A piggy back controller like DET3 would be the way to go with options to control by a paddle shift and/or ecu. They just have a bank of solenoid valves inside which control the gears Whether it's worth doing I don't know. If I had the resources and knowledge I'd definitely do it and even if the device could be used as a diagnostics tool you'd make your money back
