go to tools /analog inputs and see whats assigned to the analog connection you are trying to use

12v is no problem it wont damage the ecu. Analog IP when used as a switch are considered ON if the voltage is above about 3.6v and considered OFF if the voltage is less that about 1.5v.

You are best to use a pull up or pull down resistor so its not just open. I generally use a 2.2k pullup resistor from the +5v then just have one wire and switch it to earth, this means your signal is inverted but you can just select that option.
